Planket - The annual photo show Photo

Photographer's Note

Yesterday I went to see this year's edition of "Planket", an outdoor photo exhibition on a red "plank" (actually two) on Södermalm island in Stockholm. Planket has been arranged most years since 1982, started by a group of professional photographers as an unpretentious way of showing their work to the public in a pleasant environment.

After a while amateurs were invited. This year I applied to take part but I was turned down. I was told the lottery didn't favour me, but maybe they had a look at my TE photos and decided they were nothing special.

Anyway, I enjoyed taking photos of photos others had taken, and of people watching them. These two large photos that caught the young lady's attention were taken by Saga Wendotte, a professional photographer from Södermalm who was unknown to me.

There are two more photos in the workshop, one showing a lot of hair, the other featuring a lot of people.

Rather a strange idea taking a photograph of a photograph; I think yours is much better including the photographer. Excellent daily life composition very well realised. Pity you weren't able to participate, maybe next time.

nice capture of the moment with the woman taking images and the artworks exposed ahead. the portraits of those children are a kind of photos with a meaning, different stuff we produce, that is life running and we as hunters of images.

Hello Gert,

I was intrigued when I read your notes. How did they decide that you were ineligible?
Did you have to submit some examples or did you refer them to TE?
Photography is so subjective! I entered our local Agricultural Show with a couple of general pictorial photographs which I liked and had done well on TE. The one that won was, to my mind 'engineered' and there were plenty of other good examples that could have been chosen instead!

Anyway, I like these shots very much. There is always something so rewarding about capturing another photographer working and getting them in such a well composed shot.
I think you could have waited forever to have seen a lady with a similar hairstyle to the one in the photograph! It was enough, just to have another lady inspecting it and wondering about the 'bird's nest'! Your other w/s photograph reveals just how popular this exhibition is! It is bubbling with interest! There was one lady, though, who was wondering if she would be in the exhibition next year!

Hello Gert,

Your picture is pleasant to look at.
But I would never make a picture children with bullets, this is not nice, but not the mistake of you my friend.
The lady in foreground makes your picture real attractive certainly with the child on the picture.
This is real wonderful taken wit original colours.
Pleasant composition and amazing to look at.
Sharpness and clarity make it subject still nicer.

Hello Gert,

Kudos to the woman photographer for getting down as low as she can to avoid distortion. I am intrigued by the children wearing a vest of bullets. They remind me of the old U2 cover of their 3rd album in 1983. And even more this image on the 1990 best of album:

J'ai regardée les photos du lien de Saga Wendotte, elles sont très belles, une touche d'originalité , les enfants sont mis a honneur, bonne prise de la dame a genou pour pouvoir bien capturer la photo en présentation, belle scène , intéressante composition

Det var synd å høre at du ikke fikk delta. Du hadde fortjent en plass langs det røde plankegjerdet! Tre fine bilder av begivenheten. WS #1 kunne også vært valgt som hovedbilde. Hovedbildet er godt komponert og forteller, som så ofte i dine bilder, en liten historie i seg selv. Flotte farger også. Kanskje disse bildene henger på den røde veggen neste år?

Hello Gert.
These outdoor photographic exhibitions are very nice, here we can enjoy three of them and they are ideal with these girls and that mix that seems to show an old factory or warehouse.
The girl in difficult position also making a photo, is another incentive in this composition.
Excellent POV, with very good lighting, color and sharpness to enjoy the details.

Hello Gert, I remember this event from previous years, as seen in your gallery, it certainly looks popular and well worth a visit.
An interesting shot, taking a photo of a photo!
I like your point of view which tells us all we need to know about the place.
What a shame that they didn't include some of your shots; then you could have taken some photos of them. Try again next time please.
I like the extra shots, especially the woman with the 'hair'.

Seeing a link, I look at it immediately. The photos by Saga Wendotte are very strange, I would say rather scary. The children with the knife, or scissors, here with the bullets. They are unrealistic, yours are just real life and I prefer it. The photo by Roland Kallberg doesn't seem especially interesting, just the collage of nothing special picture (but in other sense of nothing special). The interesting pose of the woman photographer. But what does she have in her hands? Kind of camera, or mobile? Looks rather like a wallet.

How could they not choose such a prolific photographer as yourself to be part of this exhibit? ;-) It's a nice idea to have something like this. I like your photo of a woman taking a photo of another photo. It's interesting to see how many photos can be fit into the frame of someone else's photo. :-)

Eftersom jag ändå är här (och besvarar en kritik från någon som uppenbarligen villa ha poäng) så vill jag gärna ge poäng till den här fina bilden. Barnet på bilden finns ju nu i ett flertal versioner. Din version inkluderar fler färger och är också fint komponerad. Intressanta extrabilder också.

Didn't you post photos of an earlier edition of the exhibition as well? I am sure the organisation failed to look in your TE-gallery or they would have decided that you didn't have to participate in the lottery at all and would have invited you straightaway. Maybe this excellent photo of the event itself will convince them next year. The colours are superb and you included the lady so well.

What a crowd on the streets! Many artlovers in Stockholm.
Glad you didn't wait till someone with a bird on his head showed up to take the picture in WS1 :)
On the second WS, I thought at first to see Tibetan prayer flags but there are no white ones.
By including the woman on the main picture it becomes a daily life-photo instead of a still life.
Yet a strange photo at the top right.

What a pictures show, it attracks the people who walks slowly in front of them to detail them, or even take a record of the best. This yong girl seems to be alive, the picture is tender; I don't like the upper one.

ok, so i looked at the photos in the link. Here is my rant for today haha...I have never been a fan of photographers who take a very good photo, but then photoshop the CRAP out of it. Yes, we all touch our photos to some degree, me too, but photographers like the one in the link is too much. We add a touch of color, a touch of contrast and shading/brightening. That photographer takes a cute scene and completely changes the bg, changes the clouds, changes the atmosphere...thats too much, InstaGram is full of photographers like that as well. The original photo isn't even CLOSE to what the final product is. I guess there's a type of photography for everyone, but that's not for me. And the sad part is, we can tell the scenes look great without all the crap added in. sigh...its almost like an artistic impression, and if that's what they're going for I'm actually ok with it. But don't try to pull it off as a
'regular' photo scene, its artistic flare done by tonnes of photoshopping, like a Glamour Magazine of a model. Ok...i'm done...haha. I much prefer your photo here. Its real, its something we can relate to. Sorry to hear you weren't accepted, lets hope for next year! Good luck :)

For sure every photographer would stop to look at other's work, Gert.
You managed a nice moment when the lady with the red sandals kneeled for a shot with a cell-phone.
Besides the general subject here, the woman presence enlliven the scene, the colors depicted on her bag gave yet a vivid tones to the whole.

I remember you've already posted photos from this event. Probably a year ago.
Your "nothing special" street photos would look intesting next to these two looking-a-bit-staged pictures. So it's a pity the organisers missed that opportunity.
The WS photos complement this one nicely.

If they see these photos then you will certainly be invited for next year. "Nothing Special" is an excellent theme for such an open-air performance. For artistic photos there are other possibilities to win the prizes.
And what could be more fun than a photo at an exhibition with photos of the exhibition and how the public reacts to it.

Gert, the lady looks absorbed by the outdoor photo exhibition. She is capturing a picture with her mobile. The themes here are different from Te, the pictures look like more art photos. Good pov.
