Photographer's Note
Dhimsa is a tribal dance of the tribes in the eastern part of andhra pradesh, like Araku Valley near Vizag and the tribal regions of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.
The dance with its simple rhythm and the earthy colours of the tribal wear focuses on the movement of the dancers without much emphasis on expression or a literary text. Red, yellow and green are the colours the girijans attire themselves in. Movements of the feet and the hands by the group dominate the dance. With an elemental rhythm and animated, quick steps with manoeuvres resembling the darting of a centipede its raw energy captivates one.
One gets the impression that it is the collective performance that matters with each of them complementing the other and merging into a unifying whole.
Dhimsa is performed during festivals, weddings and at the time of the "hunting festival" in April when men and women dance for hours.Noted critic, A. Ramalinga Sastry, traces its origin to the Koraput area of Orissa.

Lovely, colorful, well-composed image of this dance, Ananth. I'd never heard of it before, much less seen it. Very interesting, and I thank you for sharing the photo and telling us about it. I just though maybe some slight adjustments were in order, so I tried a minor workshop. Best, -Hugh

hello Ananth,
a charming and interesting picture with lots of colour and animation. Interesting note too.
I liked Hugh's workshop as it made the colour pop.

Hi Ananth. Thanks for sharing this nice shot of tribal dance. Beautiful assortment of colours. Lot of dynamism is visible. There is some sort of resemblance with the dance performed by the Santhal tribes. Collectivism is the spirit of such dances. Great.Regards.

Hi Ananth, I had seen this photo yesterday, more time now : I like very much the movement of the arms for the ladies at the back and the impression of dance and movement on the right of your photo, ethnically it is also very interesting to see the clothes and jewels, plus colours and light are wonderful ! Charming smile too from the leading lady...
Even more interesting for me as I'll be in India and A.P. (around Khammam) to visit primary school programmes in tribal areas in one month from now ! Looking forward to seeing such beauties and to get to know those great peoples, hopefully witnessing some dances too...
TFS and compliments !
Greetings,
Cath.
