Photographer's Note

This probably is the most inventive church window I know, the so called Westphalian Last Supper.
It is one of the wonderful windows of the curch "St. Maria zur Wiese" (St. Mary on the meadow) or - more popular - "Wiesenkirche" in Soest, a town in the north east of North Rhine Westphalia. The construction of this church began in 1313. It was built in place of a former Romanesque church which stood in a very marshy terrain. After having exhausted this area the then new church was situated in a meadow, in Latin: St. Maria in pratis. Its construction lasted until the 15th century.
Wiesenkirche is considered as the most perfect in form hall church in Westphalia. It has an almost quadratic ground plan.

The window shown in my picture is situated above the northern porch of the church and it was made by an unknown artist about the year 1490. Its distinctive feature is the fact that the Last Supper apparently takes place here in Westphalia. The artist expressed this by several details. In the left one of the dishes at the table you can see a pig's head in the other one a smoked ham - typical Westphalian food. Near to the ham one can detect two jiggers. Under the table at the left you can see a beer mug.

At the end of this note let me say that "St. Maria zur Wiese" - for me - is the most beautiful Gothic church of Germany I have seen so far - above all because of its incredible windows and the gorgeous interior space. I know, this is a subjective judgement - but you should visit it ...

Using the map view function at the left you can zoom in (please click at "satellite" and several times at +) exactly to the Wiesenkirche in the marvellous Old Town of Soest.
