Photographer's Note

With this picture of a half-timbered house I start a short series from Schmalkalden (click on the map left) using my photos taken during a holiday trip in 2001. I am not really happy with the quality of scanning that modified also the crop irreparably in several cases but I think this beautiful town should be present on TE even until somebody will load up new pictures taken with a digital camera.

I want to use this series to tell you of Thuringia - one of the smallest federal state of Germany with less than 2.5 million citizens but at the same time definitely one of the most important regions in the German history and culture. Of course, a detailed description would not be possible since the history of Thuringia is so complicated that it is not taught even in schools in details. Think of that: in a period as much as 21 independent states plus 2 exclaves (territories ruled by remote sovereigns) existed on such a small land! As for the culture, now I give only a short list of great persons connected to Thuringia: Martin Luther, Johann Sebastian Bach, Goethe, Schiller, Fichte, Hegel, Liszt, Wagner ...

I hope you will find some interesting parts in my comments and the pictures will help you to get closer to this friendly country.
