Living at a different Pace, a photo from Louangphabang, North

Photographer's Note

First time I came to Laos was in 1989. At that time Laos was mostly closed to foreigners. A few tourists from Eastern Europe, a few westerners as well who were working in the country. I was lucky enough to get a visa through a Thai friend who knew a minister in the government. I was restricted to stay in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. As you can imagine this trip was a true enchantment, getting way back in time in a country that stayed in a different century. One thing that amazed me at that time was how people were walking at a different pace, how slowly life was going on all around.

When I came back to Luang Prabang last december, a few things had changed. First of all a delicate and very successful restoration job had been done. There were now tourists around. But Luang Prabang was still a city where time seemed to stand still, where people walked at the same pace they did 20 years before, like these novices going to school under the morning sun, after the clouds dissolved over Wat Sen.

C'est pas le temps de montrer de telles photos, parce qu'en ce moment, j'ai une "crise de voyagite" aiguë... :-P)

Tout d'abord, j'ai trouvé ta note très intéressante! Je suis d'ailleurs curieux de savoir si tu avais le droit de prendre des photos à l'époque.

Si ce n'était pas le cas en 89, alors je vois que tu en as profité à plein cette fois-ci. Bien que le temple semble avoir passé au feu, il n'en demeure pas moins que l'architecture et les détails qui la composent sont toujours intéressants. Le point de vue est bon, avec la lumière favorablement orientée et un soleil encore bas. La déléguation de novices est bien disposée, en terme de composition.

Hi Vincent,
A beautiful building with deep red/brown colour tones which stand strong against the blue sky. The golden pilar in front is nice, just as that white wall as a kind of natural barrier to the temple.
The monks in front give some human life in the photo which is essentiel...very nice work.

It's been nearly 10 years, since I was in Laos, & it hasn't changed a bit, which is great. A superb colour contrast, between the red roof of the Wat, & the blue sky. The Buddhist monks add a human element. Tfs!

Beautiful photo of wonderful Lao architecture. I love these roofs. And the young buddhist monks are very nice. This golden stupa reminds me the one (very big) in Vientiane. I was in Luang Prabang five years ago and I liked it very much. All those temples are gorgeus there. But I found the people very kind and I am glad that it has not changed.

A fine composition and great colours. I was in Laos, including Luang Prabang, in 1973, when there were quite a number of tourists in spite of war. I am glad to hear that some restoration is going on. Maybe I'll return.

S'il était une photo 'essayée' (?), avec des modèles engagés, je dirais que le photographe avait choisit très bien les positions et poses des moines! C'est une compo magnifique, avec des couleurs et une lumière très attirantes.
C'est bon de découvrir ce pays un peu oublié pour presque tout le monde par tes photos et ces de Ricardo.

Hi Vincent,
I like the way their robes match the colour of the roof of the temple. A nice wide angle to get in the whole temple, and the morning light illuminates the building well. Nice details and the monks add nice life to the shot. Laos sounds amazing.

Oh yes, I know this one very well. I had 3 diferent times in this wonderful city and in one of them I re-visited all the temples to see the decorations for the light festival. Excellent alignment of the golden stupa with the roof and good inclusion of the monks that make a nice contrast against the white wall. I like to feel your enthusiasm about Laos :)

Comme c'est vendredi aprèm je prends un peu de temps pour lire les notes et celle ci m'a vraiment ravi, effectivement j'imagine combien un monk laosien serait troublé et sujet à des hallucinations s'il se promenait dans les rues de Paris ! Je pense que ça fait partie intégrante de leur culture et état d'esprit, en tout cas c'est une belle leçon et un bel exemple à suivre pour nous autres speedés de la vie.
La photo est très belle, ce que je préfère ici ce sont les teintes sur le toit.
Très réussi.

A very good retrospective of a traveler in your notes. It seems you were a very intrepid traveler going to a country so recently out of conflict and a place with very few foreigners. This image is technically spot on. I like the colorful students in the image as they make the scene work. I can see this as a tourist snap without the monks and it would not have the impact this one does. This is truly a travel image showing us the daily life of a destination. Well seen, well composed, and Well Done!

Thank you for sharing the image and your story. Sometimes the back story is more important than the image.
