Architectural detail of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasilia. Niemeyer's project of Cathedral of Brasília is based in the hyperboloid of revolution which sections are asymmetric. The hyperboloid structure itself is a result of 16 identical assembled concrete columns. These columns, having hyperbolic section and weighing 90 t, represent two hands moving upwards to heaven. The Cathedral was inaugurated in May, 31st, 1970. The building took 12 years. The round 'spaceship' is located underground. It is reached through a tunnel with black walls, leading to the 'meditation zone', as it is known. Once there, a splendid 'spaceship' type artwork is exhibited, illuminated by natural lighting coming through the stain glasses designed by Marianne Peretti.
