Photographer's Note

Leon is an incredible city. Socially, architecturally, gastronimcally, it is a city I fell in love with. Unfortunately, it is also a city with a hard past. Most people know Nicaragua suffered terribly during the war years. The war still exists as a vividly painful experience for most Nicaraguans, and the signs of war and destruction are often left as sort of memorials in Nicaragua.
Leon is known as a kind of activist city, and Leon is a city filled with bullet holes. The tower of this church is riddled with bullet holes. Anyone with imagination can figure out why. The church itself is in ruins, much as the original Cathedral in Managua. I canīt remember the name of this church but it is not far from the main square, across the street from Cocinarte. It was explained to me a couple times what happened in that church but I have to admit I didnīt hear as I should because I could never get past all those bullet holes.
