Photographer's Note

An inquietant island with an incredible story :

WIKIPEDIA: (sorry for the bad translation !)
placed east of Saint Raphaël and at feet of majestic massive of Dramont, which it prolongs of its silhouette so particular, the island remained for a long time anonymous, identical to all these small rocky, flat islands nor vegetation, spread throughout the varoise coast. It is in left of 1897 when it is going to know a real epic.

Indeed, auctioning by the State, it is certain Mister Sergent ( Architect established in Dramont) which becomes the owner for the moderate 280-franc sum. Even in this time, this sum is not colossal: a car Peugeot with oil(petroleum) was then worth 7800 francs.

It is at the beginning of the century that the island changes of owner during a game of cards the stake in which it was! The Doctor Auguste Lutaud becomes then the new owner, and transforms this unpretentious island into a real kingdom of operetta.

Indeed, having some means and a passion for the history, the boss of places made raise(bring up) to big expenses a four-storeyed tower in red stones of Esterel, the identical of the rocks of the site.

It is about a "Saracen" tower, that is square and carved, what is an originality on a coast where the (round) "Genoese" towers are the most frequent.
In the euphoria which follows the construction of this tower, the doctor self-proclaims "King" of the Golden island! He so takes the name of Auguste 1st. This young kingdom becomes then the theater of luxurious receptions, run by all the Saint Raphaël's worldly society, quite close, and moreover.

So, for example, on September 25th, 1913, the 1st sovereign Auguste invites, in honour of his brother, governor of Algeria, some friends. Answer presents the General Gallieni and his wife, Jean Aicard, of the French Academy(Regional education authority), and many others. This day there, Mister Grandclément, to have greeted the monarch of several knocks of standard(cannon), is named Minister of Marine!

Auguste Lutaud will never abdicate, and his ashes rest(base) in a rock of the island today, in the shade of its magnificent tower.

The island found since then its peace of mind. t again changed owner in 1962, when a naval officer, François Bureau, buys t to Mister Olivier Lutaud, grandson of the disappeared sovereign. This sailor, which had returned life to this place of exception, died on August 16th, 1994 By carrying out a tour(ballot) by swimming that it had for custom to make every morning. The fishermen of the Poussaï since gave its name to one of the quays of the port.

This island was also immortalized by Hergé, who was inspired by it for one of its albums of Tintin: " the Black Island ".
