Photographer's Note

In Xiahe, Gansu province, there is a very special festival in January in Lunar calendar called "Monlam".

The main event is to dry the huge picture of Buddha, woven on huge silk cloth that was stored folded inside temple for a year. The monks carry this picture on the first morning of the festival and unfold it on a special wall designed only for drying this picture, and leave it during that morning in the sun. This is also a spectacle to vistors.

The photo here shows a 'special event' of this festival, that a monk is distributing the sacred water to the pilgrim. This sacred water is 'surprisingly' the urine of human being.
This is not ordinary urine but very special one. It has been collected for a year from old and high ranking monks of the whole monastry and temple in Xiahe.
The worshipers drink and paste the urine on thier faces or body, in the belief that they will not suffer from any pains or unhappyness for a year, by the sacred power of the monks...

Xiahe is one of the most important pilgrimage places for Tibet ethnic, where one of the 6 important temples is located.
