Photographer's Note

Invented by the Reverend Jonathan Scobie, an American Baptist minister in Yokohama, Japan in 1869. The contraption was a way for his handicapped wife to travel around the city.

The hand-pulled rickshaw made its way around Asia but has been replaced by cycle-rickshaws and motorized vehicles everywhere but Kolkata, the last place where it is commonly used for transportation.

There is no record of the good man's wife hollering "Scobie-Do!!!" as she sped through crowds.
