Photographer's Note

San Simeon is situated a few miles north of Cambria on the California coast. Originally belonging to the San Miguel Mission, it became a large ranch in 1836 and also served as a whaling station from 1852. A general store served the few inhabitants and also Russian fur traders and Aleut hunters who roamed the coast searching for sea otter.

William Randolph Hearst ultimately became owner of the ranch and thousands of acres surrounding, including the hilltop behind, where you can view the Hearst Castle, which was bequeathed to the State of California in 1958 and contains priceless art treasures. The one room schoolhouse lies abandoned in the field.
