Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

I have called this 'The Secret Lodge' because I cannot find any information about it on the Internet, but it was so attractive, I just had to photograph it!

When we were approaching the Falkirk Wheel, we followed a path, towards Rough Castle Tunnel and the Union Canal. When we reached the banks of the canal, we saw this characterful building.

Nearby was a lock, (I will show as a workshop) which lifted or lowered boats to Rough Castle Tunnel, leading directly to the upper part of the canal, which was serviced by the Falkirk Wheel.

I have researched the Union Canal, Rough Castle Tunnel and then Falkirk Wheel but can find no reference to this building!

I know, Rough Castle Tunnel (which I have featured previously) was built as part of the Millennium Link project to carry the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal beneath the Antonine Wall, the Edinburgh-Glasgow (main) railway line, and Bonnyhill Road. It thus forms the southern approach to the Falkirk Wheel.

Just for your information, The Antonine Wall was a Roman Wall across part of Scotland further north than the famous Hadrian's Wall.
Rough Castle was the site of a Roman Fort. The area is steeped in history!

Have a good w/e and keep safe,
Bev :-)
