Photographer's Note

Here we can see Priest Paulo in a "sound-truck". He was leading a long row of trucks and cars across the city, trying to envite the whole population to participate of a big Catholic event (Yeshua) in the town, that occurred in the next day, attracting thousands of visitors. He is trying to bring new people to the church, creating many events and bringing the youth and the older ones back. His traditional cassock and beard is part of his project to people see him, not like an usual man, but like a priest.
In the 1960's Brazilian church was transformed and many priests were convinced that communism was the real way of the Catholicism, at same time millions of Brazilians moved fast to big towns and remote regions where there wasn't many priests and they became alone and became protestants. Because these two problems only half part of Brazil is Catholic nowadays; when I was born this was almost 100 percent.
In these last decades the church is making a big effort to bring people back to the church, with many different groups acting, sometimes in different directions, some of them using the songs, others acting in political mood yet, others creating shows and big events, others keeping far from politics, some of them more traditional, others more concerned with the modern trends...
PS: Can you see the gas gallons inside the truck ? The torn pants of the guy is fancy nowadays, OK?
