Photographer's Note

Perched precariously on the side of a mountain at an altitude of 4000m, the Taktshang Goemba or Tiger's Nest Monastery is the most famous of Bhutan's monasteries. Padmasambhava better known as Guru Rinpoche who brought Buddhism to Bhutan is believed to have flown here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a nearby cave for 3 months. It can be reached after a gruelling 2 hour trek and offers spectacular views of the mountains.Built in 1692 the monastery suffered serious damage in a fire in 1998 but was rebuilt and reopened for viewing in 2005.
