Photographer's Note

This is the literal translation of how the great German poet Heinrich Heine referred to Cologne Cathedral: "Verteufelt schwarzer Geselle".
Sandstone has a tendency to develop a black surface, especially due to acids in rain. It is almost impossible to see the cathedral without any scaffoldings, there is permanently some work in progress.
It should be remarked that Heine died in 1856, while the cathedral was not finished before 1880 after 600 years of more or less permanent construction...
For photographers: even f = 24 mm is not sufficient to capture the building uncut. I had to leave the choir out of the frame.
