Photographer's Note

I was making my way back to the parking area, when, amidst the rubble, I spotted this fine specimen of a bursera simaruba, aka gumbo limbo. The bark is reddish in colour and peeling, while the wood was used by the Maya for carving. It is also known as the "Tourist Tree", as they are unable to resist taking its photo. It had been a fairly brief stop at Xlapak, but I would not have missed it. Now it was time to move on to Sayil (pronounce it "Sa-jeel") about 6 kilometres to the west.
