Photographer's Note

belly dancing is increasingly popular in the united states, but i found it very tough to photograph.

wanting to capture a sense of movement without losing the image to blur, it became one of the most challenging things i've ever tried to shoot.

ultimately, i decided to try and keep one feature steady (a face, a hand, a bellybutton...) and let the rest become a flashy, impressionistic blur.

by the end of the evening, despite my frustrations, i came away with a changed sense of what is beautiful in a woman. as you can see, this woman is not the slim dancer type we might see at a restaurant or in a film, but she was absolutely radiant, and because of that, more interesting to me than the other slimmer dancers.

have you ever tried to capture belly dancers with your camera? i'd love to hear your thoughts and advice!
