Photographer's Note
Rescanned image from a long time ago. Colour balance adjusted to match the slide.
I took this shot overlooking the ghats from the guest house I stayed in as the day drew to a close.

I gotta say Steve ...I kinda like the original version better. ...I'm flipping back and forth between the two now, and yeah, I like the off color, not to sharp, less contrasty and washed out color original ...maybe it is because this one almost looks like it was "touched up" too much ...the original has character. Just my opinion though.
OK, enough of the technical crap. Nice shot ...I love Varanasi. It's different. Different from the rest of the world, the rest of India, and almost timeless ...ahhh, timeless, maybe thats what the original gives the viewer a peak into ...it could have been taken yesterday, or last decade, or last century ...either way, nice shot.
...and guesthouse? ...screw that. By the time I made it to Varanasi I was heading to nowhere but the Radisson ...I had had it with India at that point. Hahaha ...more points to ya.

Gidday Steve
The blue caste really suits this composition as does the choice of the vertical frame. The water is absolutely luminous and you've captured the details of the architecture superbly.
Thanks for sharing, hope you're enjoying your weekend

Hello Steve - That's quite a difference between the two scans. I think this post has the richness of the velvia colours which the original post lacked and somehow the shot has a more exotic and atmospheric feel to it. The silvery light on the river is beautiful. Enjoy your weekend Rosemary
PS What sort of scanner do you use?

I have not seen the first one. This one looks great. Nice perspective. The smokes added a flavour to this photo.

Hi Steve - a great one from the archives - I agree with Lisa about the blue caste but I also agree with John as I do like the original as well. Choise, choices!!

Gedday Steve
I've tried to critique this numerous times, but kept getting booted out. I tried clicking on 'see critiques received', & it worked, so a free tip for anyone else having problems! I have been to India but not Varanasi. But I have been to Pashuputinath in Kathmandu, which is a smaller version & very similar. I like the dominant blue tones in this image, which suit the subject depicted here, of faded life. We can see a funerary pyre in the bg. Good sharpness & incredible shadow detail with a good high pov. Tfs!

hi Stephen!
Great shot, thinking that this was even scanned. Love the early morning scene where you can see how peaceful the riverside was. I could imagine what it looks like during peak hours. Great blue tones, well exposed image and nice POV. Well captured!
best regards,
Matt
