Photographer's Note

SAIDA (SIDON, SAIDON) was the third great Phoenician city-state, rivaling Byblos and Tyre as a naval power.

Sidon nowadays is known as the capital of the South of Lebanon.
The Castle of the Sea,was was built by the Crusaders in 1228 on a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway. Hence, erected in the early 13th Century by the crusading Knights of St. John of the Hospital of Jerusalem on an islet at the mouth of the harbor.

After the fall of Acre to the Mamluks all the sea castles were destroyed to prevent the Crusaders from re-establishing footholds on the coast.
