Photographer's Note

Guama’s Canyon, the most picturesque and one of the deepest and narrowest canyons of Caucasus Mountains, is situated at the south-east corner of Apsheronsk’s district of
Krasnodar's kray, between villages of Mezmay and Guamka. For more information about the canyon, please see the previous page of this TRAVELOGUE.

About the name of the canyon, I would like to say the following. Actually the name should be "Guamskoe canyon", as its Russian name is "Guamskoe ushchelye". But the word "Guamskoe" can mean either "of Guam", "of Guama" or "of Guamka" (Guam’s, Guama’s or Guamka’s). I have chosen the name "canyon of Guama" ("Guama’s canyon") according to the name of the mountain range, thru which it flows. The Cherkess word "guama" means "bad for the heart".
