Dakshineshwar Kali Temple
Bhabatarini May-er Mandir

This is a view of the Actual Kali Temple where the devotees with "daalaa" in hand queue to pay their offerings to Goddess Kali.

Queen Rasmani, the renowned queen of Janbazar, had founded this temple. It is believed that while going to Banaras on a pilgrimage by boat, at Dakshineshwar, she was instructed by Goddess Kali in her dream to construct this temple. The construction of the temple started in 1847. First, about 25 acres of land was purchased from Mr. Hasti's heirs. Mr. Hasti was planning to build up a Jute Mill on this land, but died while importing machineries from England for his mill. Price of the total land was INR 55,000. To prevent erosion of River Ganga, Macintosh and Burn, the best engineering company of that time was called up.
They prepared the Ghats [stair case to the river], the Chandni [a covered place to seat by the ghat, used for bathing, changing clothes etc.] and the Posta [uncovered place around the Ghat] with INR 160,000.

The temple was also built up by the same company, though the name of the architect could not be found. Of the three popular forms of temples of west Bengal, Bangla Temple, Chaalaa Temple and Chura Temple, this was made in the Chura Temple form with a cluster of towers, a central dome towering above the rest, a two layered roof - one superimposed on the other, four domes in four corners of each, a corridor with a curvilinear roof in between each pair of domes. The height of the Temple is 100' with a 220'X440' courtyard in the front.

The construction work was completed in 1855. The temple was inaugurated in 31st May 1855. It cost an estimated Rs. 9 lakhs of which, Rs. 2 lakhs was spent on the day of inauguration.

I've got another snap of the Temple from the front also. Here is that. I was surprised after taking this particular shot since NOT a single person passed through my lens during my click.
