Photographer's Note

Hi Folks,

I have taken this picture when I was strolling through a village near Siliguri to kill time as it was high noon and I was finding it too difficult to shoot mountains for which I initially came. Suddenly I found these two litle girls on a distant field.

Then I got this shot from some distance not to distract them as its very easy to distract kids. After the shot I went upto them and asked them if they go to school or not after a little bit of coaxing. These kids were collecting firewoods and were returning home so their mother can use it to cook lunch. As for the school they are miles away from it may be because of extreme poverty which has forced them to hold axe in delicate hands instead of Dolls.

The Government of India had started an initiative "Anganwadi" for these under privileged kids where food is given free to every child along with studies. Anganwadi is a government sponsored child-care and mother-care center in India. It caters to children in the 0-6 age group. The word means "courtyard shelter" in Hindi. They were started by the Indian government in 1975 as part of the Integrated Child Development Services program to combat child hunger and malnutrition.

I hope you will appreciate the efforts tried.
