Photographer's Note

One of the most magical event during my India journey was the Ganga aarti ceremony in Varanasi. Every evening at sunset, this ceremony takes place at the Dasaswamedh Ghat. It is , in a word, awesome. There are 5 platforms set along the bank of the Ganges, and on each platform a priest is doing the puja. The sound Hof people mainly Hindus are watching, rapt in this atmosphere of faith & belief. After the ceremony hundreds of little candles are floating to the sea- (these candles are placed upon a little basket, made from banana-leaves & flowers). They are sent into the river in rememberance of departed loved ones, as a gift to Mother Ganga.
Best to go early - it gets very crowded. Because it is also an attraction for tourists, the local shopkeepers, who have balconies, have opened them up, and offer seating. The view is better if one can get a seat at one of these places.

Dedicated to Angshuman, as from his beautiful photo I learned about this wonderful ceremony.
