.The Sanctuary of Artemisat VravronΚ. EfstratiouOn the eastern coast of Attica, betweenthe present Porto-Rafti and Rafina, one of the most important sanctuaries of theantiquity flourished that was dedicated tothe great goddess of nature, Artemis. Lifeat the Vravrona vicinity commences inthe Neolithic Age (3.50Ό BC). Until theend of the Mycenean era settlement isconfined on the rocky hill — theprehistoric acropolis — towering at thesouth part of the valley. A cemetery,dating from the end of the Myceneanperiod, has been excavated on the slopesof the neighbouring hill, called Lapoutsi.Since the Geometric years, when thefirst temple is erected, the sanctuarybecomes famous. The important demosof Philaides was located at the area, ademos which supplied Athens withrenowned politicians and military. DuringPeisistratos' tyrrany in the sixth centuryBC Athens, an edifice with a stoa, the so-called Vravroneion, was erected next tothe Chalkotheke and dedicated toArtemis Vravronia.In the fifth century BC the sanctuaryreached its climax, The poros, Dorictemple was built, the bhgde wasconstructed and the stoa was erected inwhich the so-called «arktoi» (=bears|were staying. The site has been related tothe sacrifice of Iphigenia, which tookplace before the departure of the Greekfleet for the Trojan war. The youngoffsprings of the Athenian families usedIo perform here the Artctaia ritual byimitating bears.The archaeological finds from theexcavations conducted there by themost gifted archaeologist loannis Papa-demetriou are very rich and witness thecult of the great prehistoric goddessArtemis. Gold-woven dresses, jewelry,mirrors, vases, statuettes and otherofferings are dedicated to the goddessArtemis as well as to her priestessIphigenia who, according to a myth, hasbeen buried here.
