Photographer's Note

In Pakistan, along with many other "developing" parts of the world, children seem to grow up and take responsibility at a far younger age than in the west. It is very common to see young girls taking care of their younger brothers and sisters. Boys of the same age are often helping their fathers in the fields.

Of course this fast path to adulthood comes at a price. Many children have little education and are stuck in the roles they learn as a child. The girl becomes a mother with no chance of career, the boy eventually takes over his father's business.

Somewhere there is a balance. On one hand children must learn about life and responsibility, but on the other hand must be protected enough from these to be able to develop and grow. Maybe no society yet has the right answer.
