Photographer's Note

Part 3 of my series on La Oroya
Similar to photo 1 but I couldn't choose so I added both.

children of la oroya looking over the now closed refinery that has been making the town sick for over 87 years. it is owned by american billionaire Ira Rennert who shut it down last april citing financial troubles. in 1997 he purchased two refineries in the town of 33,000 fully knowing that he had to upgrade the facilities in order to comply with higher regulatory standards in waste management and environmental sustainability. though some improvements have been made the company, doe run peru, has already modified and extended the agreement with the peruvian government once and is seeking another extension while the towns people remain out of work and out of air.

la oroya has earned a place on Blacksmith Institute's 2007 and 2008 reports as one of the most polluted places on earth, another on the list includes Chernobyl.

no post processing.
