Photographer's Note

Guayaquil is Ecuador's most important port and most populous city. It used to be a dangerous place to visit because of the high crime rate, but in recent years the city has been cleaned up. The recently renovated Malecon, or long, gated waterfront promenade is fabulous. It's a good place to get an angle on the picturesque little peninsula called La Pena, that was also recently refurbished. Now La Pena is a brightly painted neighbourhood of cafes, art shops and narrow, higgledy-piggledy residential streets. Oh yes, and did I mention lots of stairs? The lighthouse at the top offers great views over the port and the city.
