Photographer's Note
Kaingang indians live in many reserves in central part of Paraná, during some days the women come to the cities of my region to sell their baskets, in these days the women come with their sons and use some public structure to sleep open air and ask for food and money too. There is a controversy about them, the government have a guardianship about them and the leftist try to keep them primitive while a part of society would like to give them the option of rule themselves and be no more like beggars or children.
Before 16th century State of Paraná was occupied by thee indian nations (Kaingang, Xeta and Guarany). The last ones were the most populous and were converted to Christianity by Jesuits and after being attacked by The Bandeirantes, most of them were killed, took like slaves to São Paulo or escaped to Paraguay, Argentina and Rio Grande do Sul.
Kaingangs occupied the coldest central regions of my state and lost most of their territory when the colonization arrived this region between the 19th to 20th century.
Nowadays there are three reserves in the areas around my region.
There are only 14,000 indians living in my state (State of Paraná total population is almost 11 millions), most of these natives are Kaingang while the Xetá indians were extinct in 1960, few months after being discovered.
The image has a not good quality because it was a cloudy day and I was far from her.

Hi Jorge,
The baskets are eye-catching. The point of view is showing the details of the baskets and of the clothing of the woman. The light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Jorge,
This is a most interesting note to accompany the photograph!
Our study of ancient tribes must make us all feel guilty! The Native Americans, the native tribes of South America, The Aborigines of Australia, all had their land taken and their culture suppressed. Most are now living like beggars, their self respect squashed!
These baskets look bright and colourful. I do hope the lady was able to sell them for a reasonable price, to help her standard of living.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Jorge,
I am just thinking what I could use a basket like that? Maybe for storage of dirty washing?
The photo is may be less perfect but as usually you have used it as an excuse to tell us an interesting story about the region and people who live there.
Very interesting note,
M

Hello Jorge,
I like the bright colors of those baskets. There might be a VW Beetle hiding behind the trees.

Hello Jorge,
Interesting note accompanying your photo of the Kaingang woman.
The baskets she sells are colourful and have beautiful motifs.
On my journey through Brazil a long time ago, I have seen people of different skin colour pointing to European, African or Asian origin. Very often also to a mixed origin.
However, compared to other countries I have visited in Latin America (Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru and Chile) I have no memory of the indigenous people of Brazil. It's true that I haven't been to Amazonas (nor different other states of course). Only to Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Pernambuco.
You write that some of the indigenous people have escaped to Paraguay, Argentina or Rio Grande do Sul. However, the latter is a state of Brazil. How come these people found safety there?
Best regards, Paul
