Photographer's Note

Olodum is a cultural group founded in 1979 by percussionist Neguinho do Samba and based in the Afro Brazilian community of São Salvador da Bahia (Brazil).

They use music and dance to combat racism, to fight for civil rights for all marginalized groups and to encourage self-esteem and pride among Afro Brazilians. His founder developed the music style known as samba reggae (mix of the traditional Brazilian samba beat with merengue, salsa, and reggae).

Their school, located in the Historic Centre of Salvador (known as The Pelourinho) offers cultural activities to young people, largely centered around music. You can see practices of the Olodum every Sunday and Tuesday on the streets like the one on the picture.

I hate using flash but I had to because I wanted to get their happy faces. They are very young but very impressive dancers, don't miss them.
