Photographer's Note

Here another corner at Paraty village. Some people tell that the photos from there are a bit dark, it was caused by the really bad weather (rain all days when I was there).

Paraty or Parati

At the time of the discovery of Brazil, the indians of Paraíba Valey get down the mountain in search of fish. The parati fish (Mugil curema)as called by them. In the winter these fishs are easy to cach on the rivers of the region. Such quantity of fish made the indians call the place paratii that in Tupi means "water of parati" ("parati" = species of fish and "i" = river or water).

The Jesuits, evangelized the indians and the first who study their languages, were in the habit of replacing the double "i" with the letter "y" and so the name of place Paratii chance to Paraty.

However on January 29, 1942 when there was a spelling reform eliminating the W, Y K letters, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has mistakenly write the name of the city with "i".

The IBGE made the mistaken because the article 42 of this reform said: "The medieval historical tradition of secular not suffer any change in their spelling".

So the correct way to write the name of the town PARATY.
