Photographer's Note

Just four boats, the sky and its reflections on the sea, in a more minimalist view of Guarapari, facing the port of Ubu, where the company Samarco conducts its iron ore loadings.

Transport

The pellets are shipped according to the following procedure:


1. Ship in sight

When the pellets are already in the yard, ready to be placed onboard, the ship that will transport them has already been chosen by Samarco or by the customer, a specialized shipping agency contacts the Port and furnishes information about the ship, like the quantity of pellets to be shipped and the date on which the ship will reach the port. In addition, this agency represents the outfitter (ship-owner or company that leased the vessel), ensures that the ship’s documentation is complete and that all arrangements are made regarding supplies and crew changes.



2. Port of Ubu

When the ship reaches the port of Ubu, inspections begin. First, the Health Surveillance Agency verifies the health and hygiene conditions onboard. Next, the Federal Revenue Service makes an inspection, in order to see the ship’s overall condition, and to confer both the ship’s and the crew’s documentation. Any crew member whose passport and visa are not in order is not allowed to leave the ship. Only after inspection and liberation of the ship by the responsible organs can the berthing and unloading processes begin.


3. Berthing

Although they have their own engine, Panamax ships (capacity up to 70 thousand tons) and Cape Size ships (capacity up to 200 thousand tons) that reach the Port of Ubu, do not have steering control. For this reason, they depend on tugboats to perform berthing maneuvers.

When the ship approaches one of the docking berths, the pilot goes to the launch boat to guide the maneuvers, together with the tugboats. The number of tugboats will depend on the size of the ship. Therefore, the larger the ship, the more tugboats will be necessary to guide the maneuvers.

If it is windy or raining hard during the docking process, more tugboats will be necessary. This process generally takes about two and a half hours.
When the ship arrives at one of the berths, the crew throws the ropes to the masters, and the work of tying the boat to the berth begins, to prevent displacement and difficulties in loading.


4. Loading

Before embarking, the pellets are stockpiled in two yards equipped with a reclaimer, which takes the product to the conveyor belt, which leads the pellets to the ship loader. The conveyor belt has the capacity to transport 7.5 thousand tons of pellets per hour. The ship is loaded according to the loading plan.
To prevent the ore from concentrating in any compartment of the ship, the loading is done in parts. Each load takes around 48 hours; however, this time may be altered depending on the load volume and climatic conditions. Normally, Samarco loads from 12 to 14 ships a month. With the third pellet project, the expectation is that the company will load from18 to 20 ships a month.


5. Ready to sail

When loading is complete, the Port team takes the Load Draught Reading. This way, when the ship leaves the Port of Ubu, Samarco knows the cargo volume that was transported for the customer. This process makes it possible to control possible alterations in the volume of the cargo during the trip as a result of settling of the pellets, for example, which can give the impression that the ship is carrying a lighter load than was ordered, or that water entered some compartment, giving the impression of a heavier cargo than was ordered.

Afterwards, the ship is ready to sail. But Samarco’s work is not over.

Even from a distance, the Company, with support from the shipping agency, monitors the entire trip, until the customer receives the pellets. Deadlines are strictly controlled to prevent delays that could compromise the processes of Samarco’s customers.
