Castle Island is a common name for the Mantimento Island (Grocery Island). The Mantimento island is located 2km from the Paraty center and have a historical importance since Portuguese navigators left the food on this island when the tide was to high to deliver the food to the city in the colonial era. I don’t have much information about the history of this caslte, it is suggested that the castle was built in 1885 as part of the defence of Paraty bay.
Today the castle and island belong to the Italian the Italian Sergio Maggiore who lives in Brazil and owner of a factory of petroleum products is the owen of this island.
The island had an estimated value of 6 million dollars in 2001.
