Minas Gerais is a very interesting State in Brazil. It was formed by colonists who searched for gold and gems. The name means general mines, a shortening from Minas dos Matos Gerais, or mines of the general woods.

Minas Gerais is the fourth larger State in Brazil with 588.384 Km2 area, similar as France and Belgium together.

The population is around 20 millions. The medium altitude of the State is of approximately 700 meters (9% of the lands present altitudes over 1 thousand meters, with mountains between 1,5 thousand and 2,9 thousand meters).
