Photographer's Note

Maritaca is a popular term to refer to several species of birds of the family of parrots. Depending on the region, so named for parrots are medium-sized birds, smaller than parrots.

Among the various forms of popular and regional, the parakeet is also called maitaca, baitaca, cocota, Humaita, Maita, Soia, Suiá, Caturrita, among many others.

The lower the level of knowledge regarding the differences between the birds, the tendency is to call or maitaca parakeet, parrot all smaller than the parrot. In this list, and may enter both maitacas the genus Pionus, as periquitões and parakeets of the genus Aratinga, as even parakeets gender Brotogeris. It would not be surprising to attribute this generic and generalizing, even for a tuim (Forpus xanthopterygius). Older people and rural people can make a clear distinction between the various species and differentiate maitaca know a Parakeet and a parakeet. With urbanization and with little contact with nature was lost this benchmark. And as we shall see below, this name is a matter of history and rooted in our midst by our cultural heritage.
