Photographer's Note

An old rural couple after shopping something in the other side of the square. Pay attention in the umbrella. Probably it was bought in Aparecida, the largest sanctuary for Saint Mary in the world, paying honor to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil. You can see the image of the saint and even views of the sanctuary in the umbrella.
The black image of this saint in clay was found 300 years ago in the waters of a river for three fishers, it was divided in two parts and each one was found in a different point of the river. After miraculous facts it was the religious meeting point of poor people for many time and after became the union point about faith in the whole Brazil, attracting the Brazilian royal family.
In these last fours decades Brazil became a more urban country and Catholic faith is losing members.
In 1978 a protestant lad broke the image and it was restored from dust, few years after a protestant religious leader kicked a copy of the image on TV saying it was only a monstrous toy. Persecution against African religions is even worst.
