Photographer's Note

Here a old photo from my work travel to Fortaleza city (Ceará State). During the free time I try to visit some touristic attractions of the City.

In this photo I was at city central market to buy some cashew nuts.

The Central Market of Fortaleza is a market specializing in crafts and is located in City Centre next to the Metropolian Cathedral and the Our Lady of the Assumption Fortress.

Created in 1809 the market initially worked for the trade of meat, fruit and vegetables. In 1814 the premises were demolished and a new building was erected under the name "Kitchen of the people."

In the twentieth century, in 1931, trade in meat, fruit and vegetables has been banned inside the building and the premises were occupied by utilitarian and decorative products made by hand.

Several reforms were undertaken, but in 1975 the market has been completely revamped, reopened occupying an area of 1,200 square meters. The market had narrow aisles and many shops making, bobbin lace, hammocks, ceramics, and all kinds of craftwork produced in Ceará. At that time tourism has gained great momentum and the Central Market has become an attraction in the city.

In the 1990s the facilities were poor and the building was in danger of fire. On January 19, 1998 was inaugurated the new building of the Central Market designed by Luiz Fiuza. The New Market holds 553 boxes and 18 bathrooms, distributed in five floors, one being intended for parking comprising a total area of 9690.75 square meters.
