Photographer's Note

Illimani is an extinct stratovolcano in western Bolivia, just south of La Paz and east of the Altiplano, in the Cordillera Oriental range of the Andes Mountains. The snow line lies at about 4570 m (about 15,000 ft) above sea level, and glaciers are found on the northern face at 4,983 m (16,350 ft). The mountain has four main peaks; the highest, Nevado Illimani, rising 6,462 m (21,201 ft) above sea level, is a famous ascent for mountain climbers.

Illimani rises over the city of La Paz and is its major landmark. The mountain has been the subject of many local songs, most importantly "Illimani" of which the refrain goes: "¡Illimani, Illimani, sentinela de La Paz! ¡Illimani, Illimani, patrimonio de Bolivia!"
