Photographer's Note

We were in Copacabana, heading for Puno and the Juliaca airport to take the plane. Sitting in a restaurant, we were starving and waiting for the breakfast - daybrake it was, maybe 8 a.m. This old pair came as the sun woke up, and the stopped here, just in front of me. The old woman sat, the old man stood. And they spent the entire morning here, hardly moving, the grandma chewing her lips and moaning mysterious songs, or muttering to herself (she's blind), the man arms crossed, surveying the street with such an emptiness in his look that I felt empty myself too. They stayed here for hours, as awaiting death herself. Afterwards we left the restaurant - I had had time enough to take half a dozen pictures of them with the different lights and exposure of the growing morning - I guess they were mother and son, for the woman looked really older and the man was kind, respectfull and helpful in his behaviour to her (when he had any). I felt sick the whole day, thinking of what their life was like. I truly hope they're fine and happy.
