Photographer's Note

This fantastic place is Laguna Brava which is located in the Reserva Nacional Laguna Brava in the state of La Rioja, northern Argentina. The lake is situated at an altitude of 4,200 metres. Surrounding Laguna Brava are some of the mightiest volcanoes on earth including Volcano Pissis which, at 6,882 metres, is the highest volcano in the world though it is now inactive.

Access to Laguna Brava is limited to just a short period each year, usually around late April and early May, as the summer rainfalls and winter snowfalls make access almost impossible any other time of the year.

The lake shores are dotted with coned, sulphurous, geothermal springs such as the one in the foreground of the photo and one or two flamingoes wade in the shallows. You can see thin layers of ice around the lake perimeter in the photo, evidence of how bitterly cold it was that day even though it was beautiful and sunny.
