Photographer's Note

Erected in the Plaza de la República, in the intersection of avenues 9 de Julio and Corrientes, to commemorate the quadricentennial of the foundation of the city, in 1936, the Obelisk is a historic monument of Buenos Aires.

In this place there was a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, in which the Argentinian flag was hoisted for the first time inside Buenos Aires, in 1812. In memory of this event, there are inscriptions on the north side of the Obelisk, which appears more illuminated in the photo.
