Perito Moreno, Icy blue Incandescence, a photo from Santa Cruz, South

Photographer's Note

Le Perito Moreno vu depuis une des plus hautes plates-forme du belvédère d'observation. Si le glacier est long de 30 Km pour une surface de 257 Km carré, il n'est qu'une langue de glace faisant partie d'un champ de glace plus importante; l'indlansis (Norvégien qui veut dire "glace au-dessus de la montagne") de Patagonie du sud. Il occupe une surface 13000 Km², il est d'une longueur de 360 Km et d'une largeur moyenne de 40 Km (le maximum est de 90 Km). L'indlansis est partagé par l'Argentine et le Chili. La plupart des glaciers de Patagonie prennent leurs sources sur ce champ de glace tel le Perito Moreno, Uppsala et le San Rafael au Chili.

La brume sur l'horizon est en faite de la neige qui tombe. On peut tout de même à distinguer dans cette brume et presque au centre une tache sombre. Cette tache est un Nunatak qui en Inuit veut dire "Terre qui émerge de la glace". C'est en fait une montagne quasiment totalement dans la glace et dont seulement le pic émerge.

Le Perito Moreno est un des rares glaciers qui ne régresse pas. Son front ne s'est pas modifié depuis 1917. Son déplacement est un des plus rapide; environ 1,7m au centre et 0,45m sur les cotés par jour. Cela explique les nombreux morceaux de glaces qui se détache très fréquemment du front pour s'écraser avec un fracas de tous les diables dans les eaux du lac et cela pour le plus grand étonnement et plaisir des touristes.

A Very appropriate posting, Romain, as the Perito Moreno has just collapsed (a totally natural phenomenon, apparently).

I like the sharpness of this image; I think it fits well with the impressive walls of the glacier. I have my doubts about the composition (too much sky, maybe). Good shot, anyway!

The more I see of this amazing glacier flow the more I want to visit it someday.Once again you have presented us with a spectacular view of these highly compressed chunks of ice and their surreal blue colouring.Including the land mass on either side helps us appreciate the vastness of this river of ice.

The colors you captured on this glacier are remarkable!! I've read where glacier ice is colored blue and you can really see that well on your photo.

You've given us good series of the glacier photos. This one really shows the scale and gives a real feeling of seeing the differences in the dark water and mountains and the weird moody snow in the background. I might have been tempted to crop the sky a little. Would love to see this in person.

Great colors in this shot. The contrast, too is great. There is a strong mood in this shot. Somewhat eerie, perhaps. The color of the ice and the veil of clouds shrouding the mountains partly and creating such a soft backdrop and lack of color in relation to the ice is what does it. I the news of a collapse here today. Very stunning as is your photo. It really is strong. Nicely done.

Amazing colors. The fog behind gives some mystery to the shot and make it surreal. It like the blue tint on the glacier.

if you check out the january 2004 edition of national geographic you will see a photostory on patagonia with a similar shot. i think the photographer is sam abel, though im not sure. this itself is a fabulous shot. what time of the year was this taken in??? i'd like to go to patagonia especially to see the glaciers national park myself sometime in my life. so your reply will help me a lot
