Photographer's Note

Mate is the national drink in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. It is an infusion of a herb, called yerba mate, with hot water. This infusion is usually done in a vessel also called "mate" (see photo) and is drunk through a metal straw. That's practical side of the things.

Mate is a form of sharing. I saw mates passed around in buses and offices, in parks and gardens, between friends and strangers, and friends-to-be. The way N American Indians pass around a pipe (or so I was told when I was a kid).

An average tourist sees hundreds of mates for sale in Argentina. The richest collection I have found in a souvenir shop in Puerto Iguazu, and I couldn't help taking a picture... if I ever create a photo album "My Argentina" this photo will be on the cover.

Huge thanks to green who helped me to correct a picture defect (annoying flash glare, as the picture was taken against a mirror wall, and bits of the reflection of me taking picture), and to cgrindahl and fapmap who helped with advice on cropping (hence the re-post).
