Photographer's Note

Chinese New Year is celebrated by many people in Australia, and not just the 700,000 ethnic Chinese who call Australia home. The Chinese have been in Australia since the 1840's when the gold rush first came.
The festivities move across the Chinatowns and Chinese suburbs throughout the country. Here in Brisbane, the main celebration happened in Chinatown in Fortitude Valley and in Sunnybank as well, another area witha large population of Chinese.
Here we see an artist paint characters on a paper lantern at Sunnybank. The colour, sounds and smells of Chinese new year are fantastic and celebrate just one of Australia's many ethnic communties.
