Photographer's Note

This structure is near the small town of Wau , pronounced wow. To get the scale have a look and you will see a man standing below this structure. It is a massive gold mining dredge but the most amazing aspect is that it is in an isolated part of PNG and every bit of the dredge (weight 2500 tons) was flown in Junkers planes in the 1930s - the biggest airlift ever at the time. The dredge could actually move.
Apparently (LP guide) since I took this photo in early 1971 the dredges have been sold and broken up for scrap - a real pity given their size, location and place in mining and aviation history.
Scanned from a slide.
The large version is OK.
