Photographer's Note

Every country has its fast food. Here in the food corner of the Goroka market in the Eastern Highlands of Papua-New Guinea in 1971 a woman sits beside her cooking equipment. I'm afraid that I don't remember exactly what she was cooking - some sort of fritter, perhaps taro based. In the background a man wears a red banded hat - given out by the "kiaps" (Australian patrol officers) as their appointed chiefs (they weren't necessarily real local chief though.
Scanned from a 1/2 frame slide.
