Photographer's Note

This is the Tutoko River valley near Milford Sound, but it could just as well be Tolkien's Misty Mountains. Like most valleys in Fiordland, it was formed by glaciers grinding their way through the mountains, creating these steep rock walls that are usually wreathed in cloud or lashed by rain. This upward-looking view is from a pedestrian bridge next to the Milford Highway.

I applied a contrast mask in Photoshop to lighten up the darker parts of the photo.
