Photographer's Note

Milford Sound is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey (the 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor) and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Rudyard Kipling had previously called it the eighth Wonder of the World.

This is an HDR composition from three exposures, and compiled with Apple's Aperture and the Photomatix HDR plugin.

To get this shot, I walked way out onto the low-tide flats, right to water's edge. I was shocked to see that all opf the other trourists stayed back near the parking lot, in which the view was not nearly as good. They did not want to get dirty. A short 3 minute walk, and the view was stunning. I did get my feet wet and mud all over my pants.. but I can't imagine traveling half-way around the world to this lovely place and worry about something like that.

I lowered my tripod to its lowest setting, and I almost had to lay down in the mud to capture this image. I set up the camera to take three shots, with automatic exposure braketing to bring out the detail in the clouds and shadows. The HDR plugin combined them to produce this final image. Poster size prints are stunning, with much more detail captured than can show here.
