Photographer's Note

Taakoka Motu is one of the islands off Muri Beach, Rarotonga, in the South Pacific. The canoe is one of the localís fishing boats.

My husband and I spent 10 idyllic days in Rarotonga in July 2003, staying in a resort on Muri Beach. Muri Beach, is a stretch of pure paradise-like sand and water on the side of Muri Lagoon in Rarotonga, South Pacific. The clear water of the lagoon is shallow enough to walk to the small offshore islands on the other side. Most days we would walk/swim out to the islands offshore, and spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying the views of Muri Beach and the mountainous rainforest of Rarotonga behind it.

Rarotonga Island is enclosed by a coral lagoon creating shallow protected beaches all along the coast. The best of the beaches is Muri Beach. The water here is crystal clear and extremely shallow with white golden sand and palm trees.
Wear beach sandals though as there are enough pieces of coral to cut your feet to shreds. There are a few fish in the lagoon but if you want to go snorkelling try further up the coast where there's more to see. The conditions of the beach make it a great place to try wind surfing and you can hire all the equipment here.
