Photographer's Note

"Te Papa" or “Our Place” is New Zealand's controversial national museum. Some people think this is an ugly place, spoiling the waterfront.

This is a view from the inside out, with the city skyline and the waterfront in the background. The way the light filters through the upper, louvred, part of the circular window really struck me. The use of black & white here allows the viewer to concentrate on the shapes and contrasts.

It was almost impossible to get this shot without human figures as it was taken on a busy day; I like the elderly couple sitting on the bench on the left and on some levels the figure in the foreground is good too as it allows a sense of scale to be grasped.

Post processing: black and white, adjusted contrast and brightness, slightly cropped. Resized and minimally JPEGed.
