Photographer's Note

Tongariro Chalet is a fine classical lodge on the slope of Mount Ruapehu, within New Zealand's first National Park. The Park stretches around the other two volcanoes - Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro.
The National Park came about because the local Maori to prevent the selling of the mountains and surrounding land to European settlers had it surveyed and set aside as a reserve in the Native Land Court. The New Zealand Parliament passed the Tongariro National Park Act in 1894, and when the Act was renewed in 1922, the Park was expanded to 587 km2. In 1975 the Park was enlarged to 796 km2.
